Hello! One of our Volunteers is also a host mom for international (college) students, and is looking for a place her two students can volunteer. Specifically, she is looking for a place where they can volunteer 5 days a week, 5 hours a day for one month. The students have passed a criminal background check prior to arriving in Oregon (and she's getting specifics on what check was run, so organizations can see if it's acceptable to meet their criteria). Organizations that don't require a background check might be a good fit, too. Students are hoping to practice their English language skills, deepen their understanding of American work culture, and learn about social service agencies in the U.S. Anyone have opportunities that might be a good fit for these students?

Hi Pam, Portland Children’s Museum may be a good fit if the students enjoy interacting with young children and their families. We are already committed to hosting 2 other international students around the same timeframe, so I’m not sure we have the space to accommodate 5 hours for 5 days a week for 2 additional students but we could certainly be a placement for some of their service learning time if there’s another nonprofit that wants to work out a complimentary schedule (alternate days, mornings vs afternoons, etc.) with us. Feel free to reach out to me directly to discuss details volunteer@portlandcm.org or 503-471-9914.

    Cheers,

    Whitney

Thanks so much, Whitney! That's great information, and I'll pass it on. Have a great week!
