Missing Susan J Ellis

I find myself thinking of Susan a lot lately. MAN I miss her...especially listening to her latest Hot Topic rant. (I know I can listen to archives, but it's not the same!). Wow. I wonder what she would have to say about this past year.

Does anyone have a favorite quote, or experience from Susan they'd like to share? Here's a link to a Insta post I made a while ago. It still makes me giggle

I was just thinking about her the other day, too! Mostly "what would Susan have to say about what's happening now?" I've heard her talk about social movements being led by volunteers throughout history and how volunteers don't require a formal program/organization to coordinate their efforts. Volunteering as an act and not a title. And yet it seemed her guidance was mostly for organizations and leaders of volunteers in more formalized settings. (Or maybe that's just what I mostly sought out?)

I'm also be curious about ways that she might be making space for new leaders in social/racial justice movements. I know she'd be peeved about the ways some organizations have been reducing volunteer involvement (and sometimes laying off Volunteer Managers).

Thanks for bringing this up, Janell!

I loved Susan Ellis too. The Nature Conservancy hired her for an internal volunteer management workshop we hosted and she really helped us advance our skills across the organization. She gave me the confidence I needed to ask for what I needed to build a successful volunteer program and I am grateful for the many times I attended her workshops, interacted with her online and communicated with her 1:1.
