Could you benefit from having a PSU student support your organization's mission on a weekly basis from October 2018 - May 2019,  help spread the word about the work you do, and encourage other Portland State students to get involved? Are you passionate about supporting student leadership development, experiential education, and service-learning?

Then submit an application to become a host site for the 2018-2019 Student Leaders for Service program at PSU!

    Application details: https://orgsync.com/101360/forms/305646

(Application Deadline is March 23, 2018)

Student Leaders for Service (SLS) is a dynamic and multi-faceted program that strives to cultivate a body of engaged student leaders who foster meaningful connections between the university community and the Portland metropolitan region. One essential component through which this relationship is created is through student placements at local community organizations. Each year about 20 Student Leaders for Service members serve 4-6 hours per week from October through May at a community organization with a focus area or mission relevant to the academic, career, and personal goals of the student.

The role of an SLS member is comprised of two essential components. First, the SLS member will be involved with an area of identified work at the community partner site, much like an intern or ongoing volunteer, in order to assist the community partner and develop their own learning. Second, and equally important, with the knowledge gained about community partner needs, the SLS member will involve the PSU community in episodic volunteer opportunities and advocacy to further support the community organization. Therefore, in order to be a successful partner, a community site should have both the need for a regular student to perform 4-6 hours per week for an academic year and the need for involvement of one-time volunteers for identified special projects or events. If your organization has need of both of these resources, SLS may be a great fit.

In our experience, organizations that are the best fit for our SLS Members are ones that provide the following:

    • Opportunity for SLS member to co-create, facilitate and/or recruit for episodic service opportunities at service site.
    • Regular meetings/opportunities to check-in with supervisors
    • A portion of an SLS member's role is direct service. Although the SLS member's work may include advocacy, capacity building, and/or administrative work, this program is most successful if there is some level of direct service involved in the SLS member's weekly service role.

We look forward to your application! Community partner applicants will be informed of their acceptance as a potential host site in April, and then notified towards the end of May if a student (or students) would like to pursue an SLS position at your site.
