    Hello!
I am the new Volunteer Coordinator at Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter of Washington County. This program has about 60 volunteers who serve one 2 hour shifts weekly.

A request from the volunteers is to have some kind of platform where they can communicate each other--- either to ask for someone to switch or cover shifts or for social reasons and to share information.

A private Facebook group was mentioned but I am hesitant about being a moderator.

In any platform I would like to be notified of switched shifts, and I am nervous about being a moderator of such a group as I don't want to break up arguments or what not.  Plus not everyone has Facebook.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a platform to use for volunteers to communicate with?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Karrie! I'm a member of the Oregon Food Bank Volunteer Community on Facebook and you could take a look at it as an example: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oregonfoodbankvolunteers/about/

I like that they link to guidelines and have multiple moderators. Some of the moderators, at least, are OFB staff but I'm not sure if all are. Maybe they have some volunteer moderators?

I'm not the biggest fan of Facebook for all things, but I've heard from other nonprofit staff over the years that they keep going to Facebook for group forums because most of their folks are already on Facebook and it's easier than trying to teach them how to use a new platform.
