    Beaverton Police Department (BPD) has a unique opportunity for an experienced volunteer engagement professional to join the BPD Community Services Team as a Community Engagement Coordinator. This role will involve a blend of community outreach and volunteer management and is an exciting opportunity to take the police and emergency management volunteer programs to a new level after several years of pandemic-related pauses.
     
    The Community Engagement Coordinator will be the primary point of contact for prospective BPD volunteers and assist with coordinating community events from school visits to neighborhood block parties. They’ll spearhead the department’s Community Academy, and work closely with victim advocates, the volunteer traffic safety team, and Community Emergency Response Teams. On the outreach and community education front, the Community Engagement Coordinator will provide community policing, crime prevention, and resource information to local businesses, individuals, and community groups. 
     
    The ideal candidate:

    • Has experience engaging community volunteers. 
    • Is comfortable speaking to groups of all sizes about complex and sensitive issues.
    • Has experience working with public safety—law enforcement, criminal justice, and/or emergency management.
    • Is excited to work in a diverse community, getting to know the needs and engaging the city’s resources to meet those needs.
    • Is resilient—police work can be difficult, sensitive, and confidential, and this person may find themselves in briefings, working with crime victims, and in other challenging situations.
    • Has a passion for engaging the community and really catalyzing public involvement. 
    This is a full-time, non-exempt, Beaverton Police Association-classified position. The schedule will be primarily Monday-Friday, with some flexibility required for evening and weekend community events. There is one vacancy.

    Responsibilities

    • Recruit, screen, assign, train, and oversee Police Department and emergency management volunteers. 
    • Manage program activities including marketing, training, outreach, and communications. 
    • Collaborate with the Beaverton Police Department public information team to create and distribute multimedia content.
    • As the central point of contact for the Beaverton Police Department volunteer program, serve as a liaison for community members and internal stakeholders. 
    • Work with advisory groups, businesses, and the community to determine what services are needed from the Police Department. Coordinate police involvement in various community related activities and events.
    • Evaluate volunteer and outreach program operations and recommend and implement program and policy improvements. 
    • Provide information on public safety, safety resources, crime prevention, and victims assistance to clients, community members and groups.  
    • Assist in developing and monitoring the program budget. 
    • Provide professional, sensitive, confidential, and timely research and analysis to support program activities and information requests.  
    • Develop project work plans, timelines, and resource allocations. Monitor progress to ensure objectives are met. 
    • Create a positive experience for internal and external customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution. 
    • Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment prioritizing a culture of collaborative teamwork, clear communication, and ongoing personal and professional development. 
    • Coordinates program components including meeting with and/or coordinating various groups to explain processes and procedures. Apply discretion in interpreting and applying program rules and regulations.
    • Contributes to the promotion of organizational values, including personal and professional development; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; actively promote the value of respect in a multicultural society.

    Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field, and
    • Two years’ experience in program coordination, including
    • Volunteer engagement/coordination experience; or 
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position. 
    Licensing and special requirements
    • Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprints must be completed and cleared prior to start date.
    • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.
    • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.

    Compensation

    Wage range: $33.15 - $44.42 hourly
    Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
