ABOUT THE TRAINERS

Phu Dao: Phu Dao is an immigrant from Vietnam.  His family settled in Portland with the sponsorship of a local Baptist Church in 1989.  He attended Portland Public Schools and graduated from Jefferson HS.  Phu started his professional career as a Family Therapist then moved into Juvenile Justice with Multnomah County.  While working as a Juvenile Probation officer he learned firsthand the inequity of a system that was supposed to support our youth.  After leaving Multnomah County Phu worked for a non-profit program that supports undocumented youth.  The work was rewarding but was not fulfilling.  In 2011 he left the non-profit sector and began his work with PPS.  Phu found his love and passion: education.  He started as an Outreach Coordinator then became a school social worker, and for the past 3 years, he has been working at PPS' central office as a training consultant with the equity department.  In that role, Phu provided equity professional development to central office staff, district's new staff, and parents.  Currently, he oversees PPS work on chronic absenteeism, specifically high school.

Erin Barnhardt: Erin Barnhart, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert in domestic and international service, service learning, and volunteer engagement.  In addition to her role as Founder & President of Effective Altrusim, LLC, Erin is on the Board of Directors for the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration, serves on the Advisory Council for Fund the People, contributes to the Oregon Committee on Volunteerism, and was on the founding board members for the Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement.

Barry Altland: Barry Altland is a writer, speaker, thought leader, non-profit executive and published author of the books: 'Engaging the Head, Heart, and Hands of a Volunteer,' a simple guide for feeding the passion of those who serve. Barry blends world-class leadership principles for the for-profits world with his own numerous experiences as a volunteer and leader of volunteers to offer a fresh perspective on volunteer engagement. The result of the experience is rich guidance for leaders of volunteers to help them lead with Otherliness. As leaders embrace Barry's unique perspective, they develop into leaders better prepared of touch the hearts of volunteers by engaging them... one person at a time.
